[FEL-L] Renal diet for wild cats?

Hi all,
Since protein isn't good for older failing kidneys.. and what we feed our cats is pure protien.. is there a diet change for when the kidneys start to need a bit of help to process it all? 
Or is a raw diet unlike what we feed out Domestics, and better and its the Type of protein.. that matters?? 
Anyone know?
