Try this put the chicken food in the 50 gallon steel drums that come
with the detachable lids and the band around them usually around $10
to $15. They are used for food grade sugar, molasses etc and can be
had cheap at farm supply places and feed stores as they contain stuff
to mix up horse food. The rats will be unable to get to the food in
storage.
Rats have population explosions so one day there may not be a rat in
sight and a few weeks later their may be hundreds that will eat
everything available and migrate in search of new food and or
territory. If you see tunnels go to any farm store and get gopher
killers or any fireworks stands and get smoke bombs. light them then
toss down the hole and then fill the hole the fumes of the burning
gun powder will kill any rats and also show you where the tunnels are
leading.
They make live traps that are multiple catch. so more rats will keep
entering until the traps are full. take the then full trap in the
back of your local city hall and park with the trap door open until
all the trapped Rats have left to be with their own kind. I actually
do that! or you can donate the rats to falcon groups or ask a nearby
conservation dept. who raises birds of prey or owls.
http://www.cooperseeds.com/pages/traps/rats.html this traps works
every bit as well as advertized and after making a couple myself i
can tell you they are worth every penny.
http://www.bugspray.com/catalog/traps/page15.html I made mine larger
but that was unnecessary.

Someone once asked me if we have any children? I told them we used to
but the cats were allergic to them
