[FEL-L] Rats!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a friend who is having a real problem.. They have all of a sudden multiplied and are everywhere.. years back there was a discussion about how to trap and what other people do that were not too severe. Afraid of using poisons for obvious reasons.. but its really bad and something needs to be done before they come in the house and damage wires etc.. Do owl barrels/boxes work for them as well? or only gophers? 
She has chickens and realised the population explosion is probably due to their food being out at night... she started locking it up,, less food loss now, but the rats have found where she locks it up.. she is trying a few things,, but ... help?
