Charges are pending against an individual who illegally took a mountain lion
late Monday afternoon in rural Dunn County.
The charges are the result of a continuing investigation by Dunn County State’
s Attorney Ross Sundeen, North Dakota Game and Fish Department District Game
Warden Bill Schaller said Friday.
It was originally reported a bow hunter hunting for deer in northern Dunn
County shot a mountain lion near the Figure Four Ranch owned by the Three
Affiliated Tribes. At this time, Sundeen is preparing paperwork on another individual
associated with the matter. The Game and Fish would not identify those
involved in the pending investigation at this time.
The animal killed was a 60 pound female, about 1½ years old with no signs of
having cubs yet, Schaller said. The carcass was brought to the Dickinson Game
and Fish office Tuesday afternoon and preliminary measurements were done.
Schaller said the kill was not made on Indian land where tribes have their
own hunting regulations.
Mountain lions caught in traps, killed by state or federal wildlife agents or
shot to protect humans or livestock do not count toward the season’s quota of
five mountain lions for Zone 1.
There is no quota for the rest of the state until the current season ends in
March.
Schaller said this kill still counts as the third mountain lion shot during
this year’s season.
