Tiger breeding in Nandankanan

After a gap of more than three years, the Nandankanan Zoo near Bhubaneswar is
arranging a planned breeding programme for tigers to maintain a viable
population in the zoo. Earlier, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in 2004 restricted
captive in-breeding of several animals in the zoo.
Presently, the zoo has 28 tigers of which 10 are white tigers. In planned
breeding, the first pairing would be done of Anusuya and Kishan. In their last
breeding in 2004, Anusuya and Kishan had had given birth to a male tiger cub.
However, within a few months of its birth, the cub died.
Director of Nandankanan Zoo, AK Patnaik on Saturday said, "Its an appropriate
time to go for planned breeding of tigers in the zoo as the youngest tiger is
now four. In the breeding programme the zoo would adhere to all guidelines
prescribed by the CZA and would maintain a stipulated number through animal
exchange with other zoos." He also said, the breeding is planned after genetic
analysis so that the offsprings have the minimum inbreeding coefficient.
"Genetic management of captive populations is essential for successful
captive breeding," said the zoo director. He said a mathematical formula has been
derived at for selecting tiger pairs and carrying out the inbreeding programme.
Future pairs in the inbreeding programme would also be selected according to
the formula.
