Texas - Tiger Creek - Rare Golden-Striped Cats On Display

Three golden-striped tiger cubs made their debut Thursday at Tiger Creek
Wildlife Refuge near Tyler.

The rare breed was acquired from a South Carolina breeder who wanted to
distribute some of the animals to other sites to help preserve the species, said
Terri Block Werner, park director.

They were picked up Wednesday and are settling in at Tiger Creek, located on
Farm-to-Market Road 14, north of Tyler.

"They are doing great," Mrs. Werner said. "They love attention."

The Golden Tabby tiger cubs, two sisters and an unrelated male, are even more
rare than white tigers, Mrs. Werner said. They have white coats with
golden-colored stripes and markings.

The species sometimes is known as golden tiger, golden Bengal or the
strawberry tiger, she said.

Mrs. Werner said that "down the road" they will be used in a breeding program.
