It's feeding time at The Wilds, and this time the hungry animals want
more than just lettuce.
The Wilds introduced their very first carnivore edition to their
wildlife reserve. Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs now join the clan of
wild animals wandering the more than ten-thousand acre conservation.
"Moving into the carnivore direction, we plan to move in a number of
directions. This is just the first of those-so it really signals a
time when moving away from being a sort of a one trip pony, into a
much more diverse kinds of animal facility," says Director Dr. Evan
Blumer.
Dr. Blumer says we should expect a variety of meat-eaters.
"I think you can expect lots more carnivores here in this facility. We
have probably under two-thirds of the enclosures to build. You'll see
large numbers of Cheetahs, large numbers of Wild Dogs, large numbers
of Dholes-and over time those species will change, as our program
changes," says Dr. Blumer.
Currently The Wilds is home to 6 Cheetahs and 8 African Wild Dogs; Dr.
Blumer says they plan to breed the wild animals. The Dholes have not
arrived yet-but officials say they should arrive soon.
