[FEL-L] Cougar cub euthanized in Oregon

One of the most horrible things I have learned over the years, and have had
three experiences on three different occasions, that when there is a
needless killing of an exotic animal, such as in this case, there are
possibilities of three reasons (maybe more) for the senseless killing of an
innocent exotic animal.
1. that they (vet and vet students or whoever) wants to do an exploratory on
the body, so they can "learn" from the autopsy.
2. that they have such a mind set against private ownership, whether that
owner is a sanctuary or a private owner, that they would prefer in killing
the animal then allowing the animal to be in a home.
3. that they just want the episode ended, due to the countless of harassing
phonecalls, emails and letters, of people demanding ownership of the animal.
In the first, some years back (about 15 years), I took at that time, one of
my birds into the vet, to have his wings clipped and his beak trimmed. They
said it was going to be "awhile", to go and have some lunch, and when I
return, the procedure should be done. When I returned, my bird was dead.
The vet stated that my bird died while administering a sedative to calm the
bird down. I totally freaked! No vet should ever administer a so-call
sedative upon a bird, for a mere, grooming. He then proceeded to ask me, if
he could perform an autopsy on the bird. I knew then his motive, demanded
my bird's body, and promptly left. He called my house, on two different
occasions, hoping I had changed my mind in allowing him to do an
"exploratory study" on my bird's body.
In the second, I had a vet that would do house calls. As long as she was
treating "serval kittens", everything was fine. I had an emergency on one
of the serval that was at the age of less than a year, I promptly called her
for an emergency visit. She told me over the phone, the best thing for me
to do with a wild cat, is to allow it to die, rather than treating it, and
selling it for profit. I was in total disgust.
In the third - In doing rescues, I was participating in relocating a serval
that was captured due to an escape, and was given to Monday to find a zoo
that would be willing to take the serval in. But to the countless of phone
calls of people wanting a free serval, the authorities decided to kill the
serval, rather than having to deal with the phone calls and the harassment
they were receiving when they told people over the phone, that the serval
would only go to a state run zoo.
By the DOW ignoring their own 48 hour policy, and making the decision, that
the animal should be killed, and not allowing it to find a safe haven within
the exotic community such as a zoo or a sanctuary, shows the regard they
have on animal life.
Maybe they should not be responsible for an animal's welfare,
licensing/permit, inspections, and the task should be handled by the state's
agricultural department? Not knowing Oregon's exotic feline regulations,
could this be a possibility?
