CA - Search on for missing African Serval - Nala 
Animal that resembles a cheetah not dangerous

A domesticated African serval — a cat resembling a small cheetah — is on the 
loose in the Hanmer area. 

Staff at Pine Ridge Ranch on Dupuis Drive have been searching for the cat, 
named Nala, since she escaped Friday afternoon. 

Christina Lapossie, who works at Pine Ridge, said the animal is not 
dangerous, but should not be approached. 

"We don’t know how she will react to strangers because she is out there and 
scared right now," Lapossie said.      


Nala belongs to Pine Ridge owner Diane Korpela. Lapossie said the animal was 
hand raised in Korpela’s house. 

"We just put her in the barn recently to get her used to other cats and give 
her some socialization," Lapossie said. 

Nala was being transferred into a cage with other African servals on Friday 
afternoon. The other cats have lived in the cage for two years, but Nala was 
able to find a way out. 

"When we closed the doors she managed to escape through the bars," Lapossie 
said. 

Staff are asking anyone who sees the animal to call Pine Ridge right away at 
969-1127. An undisclosed reward is being offered for the person who gives the 
tip that leads to her capture. 

"She is to be caught alive and caught by us," Lapossie said. 

"She is a cat that usually goes to owner," she said. "Diane is the only one 
pretty much who can catch her." 

Staff at Pine Ridge have been searching the area, but are asking for 
volunteers to help. 

"The more people we have the better," Lapossie said, adding the animals like 
to hide in tall grasses. 

The animal is about the size of a medium dog. She has pointy ears and tan 
colouring with black spots.
