Cross posting permitted.

Contact information to OPPOSE CA AB 2862 is at the end of this email.
TODAY - Please email, fax, and call the senators and the assemblyman who are now
involved with this bill.

This request is addressed to anyone and everyone who wants to show their
support of animal breeders, animal sellers, and animal keepers in the state of
California. Whether you breed, sell, or keep animals, AB 2862 will affect
you negatively if it passes. You don't need to live in California to voice
your OPPOSITION to AB 2862.

As of today (8/8) AB 2862 has not been amended to address any of its many
serious problems, as was promised by its author at the 6/26 public hearing.
Despite claims that the author and sponsors are negotiating in good faith and
have made the bill acceptable, NO amendment containing ANY of the promised
revisions has been posted yet on the CA legislature'on the CA
legislature'<WBR>s websit Still, the next hearing is set for 8/10 (2 days from now).

The last version of AB 2862 published is

AB 2862 seeks to impose restrictions on the sale of all vertebrate animals
(i.e., all animals with a spine, including all mammals, birds, reptiles, and
fish), and seeks to impose very detailed husbandry standards on the keepers of
all vertebrate animals that are kept at "pet stores", which under AB 2862
are defined as "any establishment or marketplace where animals are bought,
sold, exchanged, or offered for sale to the general public with the intent of
making a profit where the animals are intended as companions or household
animals. This term includes the keeping for transfer or the transfer of animals
at flea markets, department stores, merchandise outlets, and discount
outlets. "

AB 2862 defines an animal as "any nonhuman vertebrate species, and includes
rodents intended as food for reptiles."

AB 2862 is vague, overbroad, includes serious criminal penalties for minor
and tecnical violations that don't harm animals, and does not guarantee the
humane treatment of any animals in "pet stores". California law already has
strong criminal laws on the books to identify and punish animal abuse.
Adding another layer of very restrictive legislation on pet breeders, sellers,
and keepers, (AB 2862) will not stop the abuse of animals by those who abuse
them. Enforcing the strict criminal laws already on the books is the way
to curb and punish animal abuse.

AB 2862 will make it very difficult, if not impossible, for all pet breeders
and pet sellers to continue to do business in California. If pet
breeders and pet sellers are put out of business, pet keepers will soon have no
source of healthy, well socialized pets.

AB 2862 is being used by Animal Rights activists as a template for future
restrictive legislation in other states. If AB 2862 passes in California,
we are informed that there are already plans to introduce mirror legislation
in other states.

Please take a few minutes TODAY to call, fax, and email the 5 members of the
Senate Committee who are going to hear AB2862 again on Thursday 8/10, and
also contact the assemblymember who has sponsored the bill.

Be sure to write PLEASE OPPOSE AB 2862 in the subject line of your fax or
email. When you call, be sure to open with PLEASE OPPOSE AB 2862.

There is no need to say anything else complicated, they probably won't have
time to read it or talk with you for any length of time. At this point the
legislators are mostly counting numbers pro and con. They are rushing to
pass about 1500 bills before the close of the California legislative session
at the end of August.

IF YOU OWN A PET, OR WANT TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO OWN A PET, PLEASE HAVE
THE COURAGE TO ACT NOW - AND STAND UP FOR PET BREEDING, PET SELLING, AND PET
KEEPING IN CALIFORNIA.

Thank you.

Genny Wall
