Since you put it in such a profound and cast-in-stone manner, doesn't castration/vasectomy or ovariohysterectomy fall under the same "mutilation solely for human reasoning" concept?

And with due deference to Dr. Antle's followup.... the AVA has recommended many things that were later found to be counterproductive to animal care, just like the FDA or any other organization with a vested interest in something. I could bring up lots of AVA publications from the past that say DDT is not harmful to animals or livestock, but.... *shrugs* you do the math. Any individual or group is inherenly fallible so one must trust one's own knowledge and logic before the advice of others.
