Suspected serial killer hearing 'lion noises'
By Norman Joseph
The man charged with 61 alleged crimes on Philippi farms, including murder
and rape, wants to consult with a sangoma because he claims he has heard a
constant predator-like noise in his stomach.

Jimmy Maketta, 42, made his request known in the Wynberg magistrate's court
on Friday before magistrate Hafiza Mohammed.

According to a psychiatric observation report from Valkenberg Psychiatric
Hospital recently handed to Mohammed, the accused said he felt like a lion or
tiger and heard voices after watching wildlife television programmes at the
time of the crimes.

However, the report stated that he was fit to stand trial on the charges
after having spent 30 days in the psychiatric hospital.

State Advocate Deidré Rossouw told the court she and her colleagues were
still awaiting a letter from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

DPP deputy director Nollie Niehaus was on annual leave and expected to sign
and forward the letter to the Wynberg court this week, authorising that
Maketta face a trial in the Cape High Court later this year.

The charge sheet could still change, depending on the DPP.

Earlier this year, the charge sheet showed Maketta faced 13 charges of
murder, three of attempted murder, 22 of rape, one of robbery with aggravating
circumstances, five of housebreaking, four of assault with intent to commit
grievous bodily harm, and two charges of kidnapping.

It now shows 16 murders and 30 rapes, in addition to the other charges.

On request from Rossouw, Mohammed postponed the case to September.

Attorney Cheryl Horne, of the Legal Aid Board, represented Maketta on Friday.
